Severe Weather Update for Sunday April 7th

A squall line developed overnight across south Texas and will continue to track east this morning across parts of central Texas and the coastal plains.  The squall line will continue moving into and across southeast Texas within the next few hours.  The Storm Prediction Center has outlined much of the coastal regions, southeast Texas and parts of eastern Texas under a Slight Risk (Level 2) for severe weather this morning with damaging winds, localized flooding and hail being the main threats.  The tornado threat is low but cannot be ruled out with quick spin-ups possible along the leading edge of the squall line.  Parts of southeast Texas are under a Severe Thunderstorm WATCH until 3pm this afternoon.  The southeast Texas counties included in the WATCH are Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Burleson, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Houston, Jackson, Liberty, Madison, Matagorda, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker, Waller, Washington and Wharton.

If you must travel this morning across areas which received rain overnight or this morning, we highly recommend checking www.drivetexas.org for the latest on roadway closures as some rural roads in the region have been closed down due to water on the roadways.  While the entire storm complex will continue to track east this morning and into the afternoon hours, we will see the northern extent of the storm complex lifting north towards north central and northeast Texas today.  While the likelihood of severe weather will decrease the further north you are, it still bears watching if you have outdoor plans today.

Here’s a look at the latest simulated radar loop which takes us through about 7am Monday morning.  As always, keep in mind this is a model forecast and reality might look a little different, but this will at least give you a reasonable look at what to expect throughout the day and into the overnight hours.
