Strong non-thunderstorm winds increasing this evening

Winds are increasing this evening as an area of low pressure in eastern Colorado begins a period of rapid intensification. That low is going to move into Kansas later this morning, but it’ll result in gusty to damaging winds across Texas through most of the day (Wednesday). We’ve seen wind gusts of 40 to 50 MPH over the last hour in the Concho Valley, Big Country, and North Texas. These winds are not associated with the squall line moving east into the Big Country.

We do note that several wind gusts of 60 to 70 MPH have been observed with the line of storms as they’ve moved through Big Spring, Gail, and Post. Those will continue, but the winds impacting a larger geographical area have nothing to do with the storms.

The gradient winds may result in tree limb damage, isolated power outages, and crosswind issues for vehicles. Strong westerly winds will increase this morning across the Davis Mountains, Trans-Pecos, West Texas, and Texas Panhandle. Those wind speeds could exceed 60-70 MPH later this morning and afternoon due to the very intense area of low pressure in Kansas. This will be a very windy day, even once we’re done with the storms.

Forecast max wind gusts for Wednesday (unrelated to thunderstorms)
