Déjà vu: Another Round of Heavy Rain & Localized Flooding Tonight in South Texas

Last night’s heavy rain certainly verified across portions of South-Central Texas. In fact, residual flooding continues to impact low-water crossings across the San Antonio metro this afternoon. With that said we’re now going to focus on our next chance of localized heavy rain. Wouldn’t you know it? That next chance just happens to be tonight into the morning hours on Monday.

The National Weather Service Service offices in New Braunfels, Corpus Christi, and Brownsville have extended their flood watches into the morning hours tomorrow. This watch includes Austin south to San Antonio, west/southwest toward Eagle Pass and south toward Freer and Rio Grande City. That means this watch is for western portions of South-Central Texas, the Edwards Plateau, and western portions of South Texas. Those regions are where the threat is highest tonight for new/renewed localized flooding.

Like last evening we’re seeing a relative lull in heavier rains this afternoon. We anticipate an uptick in showers and thunderstorms across South-Central and South Texas late this evening. The High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model depicts this scenario well. Tropical moisture remains in place and storms will be slow moving. If you end under a heavy storm don’t be surprised if you get a quick 3 to 5 inches of rain. The threat of flooding will be enhanced if those higher rain totals fall over a location that has already seen heavy rains this past week. That threat does include San Antonio tonight, but the heaviest rains should shift south of Interstate 10 by the morning commute. Remember: Turn Around Don’t Drown!
