While all of the remaining Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings across the southern half of the state will expire by midnight, cold arctic air will remain firmly in place overnight and through tomorrow as well before we begin to warm up for the weekend ahead. For many folks, some of the coldest air we’ve seen in quite some arrives overnight. Very dry air plus clearing skies will allow temps to really take a nosedive tonight.  The forecast lows are expected to bottom out in the single digits for much of north Texas and parts of the panhandle. Low to upper teens will be felt as far south as the coastal plains and the Big Bend region. Any residual snow, ice or sleet leftover from today’s winter storm will still be an issue tomorrow morning, so be sure to check your local media or www.drivetexas.org for the latest on traffic before heading out to work or school tomorrow. There’s also no doubt about this is pipe-busting cold, so hopefully everyone has taken the appropriate measures already to decrease the chance of frozen water lines. Recommended actions, now that the cold air has settled in, are to open cabinet doors and let the warmer indoor air circulate around pipes. Also, remember to leave your faucets dripping overnight, especially those adjacent to exterior walls. Forecast highs on Wednesday will finally get above freezing for much of western Texas, but we’ll still be dealing with stubborn near freezing temps everywhere else.  Lows going into Thursday morning will still range in the 20s to near freezing all the way down to the coast, but we’ll see a decent warm-up by late afternoon with highs finally above freezing across the state. The good news is that we’ll see a gradual warm-up for the remainder of the week, and we’ll be back up into the 60s by Friday, and 70s by Saturday and into Sunday which will be well above normal for mid-January.  It’s also looking like we may see the return of rain chances and perhaps a few thunderstorms on Sunday ahead of our next front. We’ll have more details on that as we get closer into the weekend, but at this time, our next front will likely not be nearly as strong nor as cold.
