Winter Weather Advisory for Dangerous Driving Conditions Tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a travelers advisory for portions of Texas. This advisory includes West Texas, Northwest Texas, the Big Country, the Concho Valley, Texoma, and portions of North Texas. On the south and east side, this advisory runs along and north of a San Angelo to Brownwood to Weatherford to McKinney to Paris line. A winter weather/travelers advisory means light accumulations of freezing drizzle could create hazardous driving conditions tonight and Sunday morning.

The primary concern for tonight, besides the very cold wind chills, will be freezing drizzle. This activity will not be heavy enough to show up on weather radars. In fact, its just drizzle or fog – except temperatures are going to be in the 20s. Water droplets will freeze on contact with most objects, including bridges and roadways. These events can often escalate into hazardous driving events since most folks drive way too fast for conditions. Be especially mindful of black-ice on bridges and that it only takes 0.01″ of ice accumulation to ‘ice over’ bridges and roadways.

We could see the possibility of freezing drizzle expand south in North Texas toward Central Texas and East during the afternoon hours Sunday. Overall ice accumulations would be non-existent to a trace, but that would be enough to cause slick conditions to develop on some roadways. Check the forecast before heading out tomorrow.
