Winter Weather Advisories remain in place across much of west Texas this morning as on and off freezing drizzle and freezing fog continues across the area.  As temps warm today, this will help to melt the thin layer of ice that has formed on bridges and roadways…but for now, conditions remain slick. These Winter Weather Advisories will remain in place until 11am this morning for the southern Texas panhandle and rolling plains counties (Lubbock area), but will continue until 5pm for areas further south and west across the Trans Pecos, Guadalupe and Davis Mountains regions. Forecast highs today will remain chilly and we’ll be stuck with persistent cloud cover and gloomy conditions today and overnight. The panhandle and far western Texas will have the best chance at seeing a bit of sun later today as clouds begin to break up a bit, but the remainder of the state will remain socked in through today and overnight as well.

Looking ahead…we will will need to carefully monitor the forecast for New Years Eve (Sunday) into New Years day (Monday). Arctic air will begin to filter into the state beginning Saturday with temps currently expected to bottom out in the teens and 20s across northern Texas by Sunday night into early Monday.  Precip chances continue to look sparse, but forecast models are now starting to align on the possibility of at least some freezing precip possible across parts of north Texas New Years Eve into New Years Day…although confidence in this remains low at this time.  Even a small amount of freezing precip could result in some travel headaches, so be sure to check back for updates as we continue through the week and into next weekend.
