Harvey Becomes a Major Category 3 Hurricane; Tornado Watch Issued for Coastal Regions

Harvey has become a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 120 MPH. Additional strengthening is possible and Harvey may make a run at category 4 status (130 MPH sustained) before making landfall tonight. This is in line with forecasts and will not really make much of a difference in terms of total impacts. See our blog from earlier for a more comprehensive update. We’ll have a new comprehensive update out shortly after 4 PM with the new National Hurricane Center advisory package.

We also now have a tornado watch for coastal regions of Southeast Texas and the Coastal Plains through Saturday morning. Feeder bands from Harvey will pivot on-shore through the evening. Brief tornadoes are expected and we’ll likely see several tornado warnings through the evening. These tornadoes usually are weak and last a few seconds.
