We’re starting off this Monday morning with a band of moderate to heavy rainfall pushing east across north central Texas.  It’s moving pretty quickly, so we expect the heaviest rainfall to be out of the DFW metro area within the next hour or so.  Between now and then, expect roadways to be a mess as you head out to work or school this morning so allow extra time to reach your destination.  Within a few hours after sunrise, we’ll begin to see much of the heavy rainfall diminish with lingering showers possible across parts of northeast and far eastern Texas into the early afternoon.  Redevelopment of isolated pop-up showers is possible later this afternoon across north central Texas.  Widespread rainfall and storms are not likely, but some of the storms that develop later today will bring the chance of brief heavy rainfall, gusty winds and frequent lightning.  Fort the panhandle and west Texas regions, we’ll continue to see chances for strong to severe storms moving in from eastern New Mexico later this afternoon and through the evening hours.  We’re not expecting a repeat of yesterday evening, but a few of the storms impacting the western panhandle and far western Texas this evening could become severe with mainly a damaging wind and hail threat.  Below is a look at how the radar may shape up through about 11pm this evening.  Keep in mind, this is just a forecast model…not live radar.

Highs today…cooler than average for this time of the year across the panhandle, but quite warm and sticky elsewhere…especially for areas along and east of the I-35 corridor where moisture continues to be quite high for this time of the year. Highs in the mid to upper 90s with high humidity will allow Heat Index values to reach 105 to 108 this afternoon for much of south central and southeast Texas this afternoon.  Looking ahead…August heat will begin to really take hold by the middle of the week and we’ll begin to feel the effects of a true August heatwave just in time for all the kiddos to return to school.  While temps will not soar much above average this week, the lingering humidity will make it feel quite miserable if you’re outdoors during peak daytime heating for any length of time.  For parents and coaches…remind kiddos involved in after school sports to stay hydrated and be aware of the signs of heat-related illness.
