Tuesday August 8th Weather Outlook – Heavy Rainfall for Southeast TX

The weather highlight this morning is the ongoing rain and flooding across much of southeast Texas.  A large complex of storms dropped in excess of 6-8 inches across parts of the region overnight, so flash flooding will be a major concern during the early part of the day especially along rivers, creeks and bayous.  Thankfully, this complex of heavy rain is expected to decrease in intensity as the day goes on with a break in rainfall by this afternoon.  Additional very scattered storms could develop again across the region late this afternoon, but a lot will depend on how worked over the atmosphere will be after this morning’s storms.  We urge everyone across the region to check local weather and road conditions before heading out to work this morning, and allow extra time to reach your destination.  For the Panhandle region, we’ll see another chance at storms arriving from the northwest later this afternoon and evening.  Most of this activity will be confined to the northwestern and northern panhandle, with decreasing chances the further south you are.  Elsewhere, just chances for scattered “popcorn” storms this afternoon during peak daytime heating…most of which will be south of the I-20 corridor across the state.

Temps today, still averaging below normal for this time of the year…but we will still feel quite warm and sticky with plenty of moisture hanging around the central, southern and eastern portions of the state.  We’ll heat up a couple of degrees each day this week and we’ll see widespread heat index values reaching the low 100s for much of the central and eastern half of the state by tomorrow into Friday. A cool front is forecast to arrive sometime Friday, but as with most fronts during this time of the year, it will have a difficult time making much southward progress.
