Very Warm to Downright Hot February Weather Continues…

The most overused term this winter has been the temperature roller-coaster. Yet, that’s what we’ll be dealing with over the next five days. Record high temperatures are forecast this afternoon across the southern half of Texas with middle 80s into the middle 90s. Laredo and McAllen forecast to top out at 94 degrees this afternoon. A cool front, moving south across the northern half of Texas, will help knock temperatures back down closer to seasonal averages. Temperatures will remain well above average, but lower than the 70s/80s we saw the past few days.

Thursday will be the ‘coolest’ day as we head into the weekend with high temperatures in the upper 50s along the Red River into the 70s and lower 80s across the Borderland into South Texas. For February, these temperatures remain well above-average. Hey, it certainly beats an ice storm.

Temperatures go back up on the roller coaster on Friday with highs in the 70s and 80s across Texas. Record high temperatures are possible in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, the Permian Basin, into Deep South Texas with middle 80s forecast. We’ll peak on Saturday with widespread 80s across Texas. Several cities are expected to set new record highs and some 90s are certainly possible. Saturday will also be a day of very high fire danger due to record high temperatures, very dry surface fuels, and low relative humidity.

A stronger cold front, and possible chance for precipitation, will arrive on Monday. Temperatures will finally be knocked back down toward seasonal averages with 40s and 50s for highs north of the front. Precipitation chances remain uncertain due to weather model variability, but we’ll keep tabs on the potential. Expect more details as we get into Thursday and Friday.
