Major Hurricane Matthew a Direct Threat to Florida & Possibly Eastern US Coastline

Hurricane Matthew continues to be a powerful, life-threatening storm near Haiti this morning. Like watching a bullet train about to hit a stalled car, all you can do is observe as a humanitarian disaster unfolds. The death toll in Haiti is likely going to be in the thousands amid catastrophic flooding, mudslides, and wind gusts over 160 MPH. This is going to be a situation where an international response is required in the coming weeks. Alas, all we can do is observe from afar.

Weather model guidance has continued to reinforce the westward trend in the upcoming 3 to 5 day timeframe. As such confidence is increasing that major hurricane Matthew may skirt or make landfall in eastern Florida on Friday. Ocean heat content remains quite high in the Bahamas and Matthew will likely remain an extremely powerful hurricane. Hurricane watches are expected for the eastern coast of Florida later today – and preparations should begin for a hurricane landfall. The current forecast keeps the center of Matthew just offshore the eastern coast of Florida. This solution would result in a significant tidal flooding event and hurricane force winds along the coast. Impacts inland would also occur. Again, this is going to be a very close call for Florida.

After impacting Florida, a turn to the north/northeast is anticipated. Matthew will than threaten the Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina coastlines through the weekend. A second landfall is possible in this timeframe with Matthew remaining a dangerous hurricane. The last major hurricane to make landfall in the United States was Wilma on October 24, 2005. There is serious danger that the nearly ten-year streak could come to an end over the next several days. Folks from Florida up the eastern United States seaboard need to monitor forecasts closely. This one is the real deal – a powerful hurricane with a history of causing loss of life.
