Scattered Storm Chances Today; Unsettled Weather Late Week

2016-08-09_6-06-37

Thunderstorms became more widespread than expected overnight in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, and Northwest Texas. A weak upper level disturbance generated more lift than what was previously expected. With plenty of moisture in place storms became widespread overnight. Severe weather was not an issue and I doubt too many folks are complaining at the unexpected rains. Most locations received a quarter to half inch of rain, but some got lucky and picked up over an inch overnight. Not bad for August!

The weak upper level disturbance responsible for the overnight storms will continue to slowly meander around northern sections of the state today. The rain ongoing this morning should become more localized by the early afternoon. As temperatures warm additional isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop later today. These popup storms will move slowly and will be hit or miss. These chances will include the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Northwest Texas, North Texas, Northeast Texas, East Texas, and Southeast Texas. Thunderstorm coverage will become isolated tonight, but should continue into the overnight hours.

Higher thunderstorm chances are forecast tonight across Far West Texas, around El Paso. Remnant moisture from a tropical storm in the eastern Pacific will combine with the monsoonal flow. Scattered rain and storms will likely increase later today and tonight around Far West Texas. Severe weather is unlikely but locally heavy rain can be expected.

Surface front forecast for Saturday morning

Surface front forecast for Saturday morning

A rare summer cool front will bring chances to our weather by Friday and Saturday. The cold front should push south and make it into the Permian Basin, Big Country, and North Texas by Saturday morning. Precipitation chances will increase in proximity to the front. Increased clouds will allow temperatures to be cooler – and some locations will experience below-average temperatures. The best chance for cooler temperatures and scattered storms on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will be across the northern half of Texas. We’ll be watching trends and will likely post a dedicated blog on this weekend’s front later on today.
