3PM Severe Weather Update for Far W TX & Deep S TX

2016-05-18_14-58-17

A complex of severe thunderstorms is impacting Deep South Texas this afternoon and may impact the Rio Grande Valley after 4 PM. The leading edge of these thunderstorms extends from 15 miles south of Falfurrias to Rachal to 25 miles northwest of Edinburg or 12 miles west of Linn. This complex of storms developed in Mexico earlier this morning and has been making steady eastward progress through the afternoon. The strongest segments in this complex are capable of producing large hail and damaging wind gusts. Very heavy rain and frequent cloud to ground lightning is also being produced. Storms are moving east at 25 MPH> The threat for severe weather will remain with this complex until it finally weakens later this afternoon as it gets closer to the coast. Additional storms may form just south/east of the complex if it produces an outflow boundary. Those in Deep South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley should keep an eye on these storms as they slowly progress east/southeast this afternoon.

Otherwise the only other region we’re watching for isolated severe weather potential is Far West Texas this afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center does have a category 2 risk out for the El Paso area. Besides the complex in Deep South Texas areas further north are in cloud cover with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Additional rain is expected tonight in those regions but severe weather is unlikely. We’ll be talking about this evening and tonight’s rain chances and potential flooding issues in a later blog.
