1145PM Severe Weather Update

2016-05-17_23-39-34

Intense thunderstorms are impacting the San Antonio Metro late this evening. Baseball size and larger hail impacted Castroville in the last 30-45 minutes. Significant damage to windows and vehicles has been reported. This storm is now over Von Ormy and Somerset with similiar impacts possible. Next up will be Earle and Thelma along and south of Interstate 410. Get away from windows and take shelter in an interior room. Destructive wind-driven hail is possible and has already caused significant damage.

Damaging winds of 55 to 65 MPH are occurring from Spring Branch and Bulverde to just west of New Braunfels and Comal. This area of damaging wind is moving east towards Interstate 35 and New Braunfels and Comal. Get away from west-facing windows and prepare for severe wind. The good news is the hail threat is much lower compared to the storm on the south side of the San Antonio metro – however we’re trading one evil for another. Wind damage threat is higher with this area of storms.

Good news is as a whole most of the activity should slowly weaken as it pushes east/southeast towards the Coastal Plains and Southeast Texas overnight. The threat for damaging wind gusts may continue for another few hours but we should see the very large hail threat slowly diminish through 1-2 AM. Some flash flooding will be possible where the complex of storms tracks overnight. The heaviest rains will likely remain south/west of Houston. Additional showers/storms may form west of Interstate 35 in South-Central and Southwest Texas tonight. This new activity is unlikely to be severe but a few storms may become strong.
