5:15 PM Severe Weather Update

Thunderstorms have continued to develop over the past hour across the eastern Concho Valley into southwestern sections of North Texas. Several of these thunderstorms have become severe with large hail up to the size of hen-eggs (2″) and damaging wind gusts over 60 MPH. Over the last few minutes there have been multiple reports of 60+ MPH winds in the city of Comanche. Multiple hail reports have been received and sizes are increasing.

  • Thunderstorms thus far have not developed near the D/FW Metroplex. The threat of an isolated storm or two to develop will remain through 7-8 PM. If a storm goes up it could become severe quickly with large hail. Storms southwest of D/FW may impact portions of the metro later this evening – but they could also pass south of D/FW completely.
  • A left-split supercell with large hail and damaging winds moved through Comanche moments ago. Its moving northeast around 30-35 MPH and may impact Eastland and Erath counties in the next 45 minutes.
  • The right-split supercell is becoming more dangerous north of Goldthwaite. This dangerous supercell is now capable of producing hail up to the size of baseballs and destructive wind gusts over 70 MPH. This storm is moving almost due east now and could impact Hamilton, Evant, Gatesville, Clifton, and eventually Waco over the next few hours. We’ll be watching for signs of increasing low-level rotation as the tornado threat needs to be monitored with this cell.
  • Multiple storms with large hail up to the size of golfballs continue to develop across the eastern Concho Valley from east of Eldorado to Menard, Eden, Melvin, to just southwest of Brownwood.
