A Parade of Cold Fronts This Weekend – Light Snow Chances Friday into Saturday

Good evening everyone!  Let’s start off with the overall forecast for tonight and tomorrow, then we’ll get into the details for our next shot of wintry weather!  For tonight, lows will be mostly seasonal for this time of the year ranging from the 20s and 30s across the panhandle and west Texas behind a cold front, with 40s expected across northeast, central and south Texas.  Closer to the coast, we’ll see lows tonight in the 50s.  The only hazards to speak of overnight is the fog.  We already have heavy fog reported around Houston and Galveston with Dense Fog Advisories in place until early Friday morning.  Some areas are already experiencing reduced visibilities down to 1/4 mile and less, so be extra careful if you’re driving around tonight and when you head off to work or school tomorrow morning.

Highs on Friday, warm and above seasonal averages with 70s along the coast, mid 60s across central Texas, and 50s across the panhandle.  Not too shabby for mid January!

Now for the winter weather forecast! Several cold fronts will impact the state over the next several days. The first cold front arriving tonight will not have much of an impact on temperatures, and will mainly give us a wind shift from the west and drag some drier air in behind it.  Another slightly stronger front will arrive late Friday into Saturday bringing the chances for wintry precipitation with it across portions of the panhandle late Friday into early Saturday, and then across north Texas by early Saturday.  Accumulations of up to one inch are expected across parts of the panhandle before the snow moves out Saturday afternoon.  Travel impacts should not be significant with just the usual slick spots on elevated surfaces and bridges.

North Texas will experience mainly just a rain/snow mix by early Saturday, but we could see a few areas with all snow on and off until late morning.  During the time the snow will be falling across north Texas, surface temperatures are expected to remain just above freezing.  However, cooling effects from precipitation across the area may lower temps to freezing and we may see brief periods of all snow during that time.  The most likely areas to see snow will be north of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex.  Across the DFW metroplex and south, mainly a cold rain with a few flakes mixed in.  Travel hazards are not expected across the area as the ground is still warm and most of the snow will just melt right away.  Still caution is advised on bridges and overpasses early Saturday, especially for folks north of the metroplex.  We should see the snow coming to an end by early Saturday afternoon.

We’ll see a brief warm-up on Sunday, then another strong front arrives Sunday night into early Monday. This will also bring a chance of light snow across parts of the panhandle, and potentially a light rain/snow mix for north Texas.  This system is also not looking like a major winter weather event with no significant travel impacts expected.  Of course we’ll keep an eye on this and let you know if anything changes in the forecast!
