Sunny and Cool December Day Ahead across Texas

2015-12-18_6-03-47

Temperatures are starting off cold this morning. The Texas Panhandle and the Alpine Mountains have both made it down into the teens this morning. Most locations west of Interstate 35 are below freezing this morning. Even those not below freezing are still chilly – but at least we don’t have a blistery north wind with nasty wind chills.

Temperatures will recover nicely this afternoon as high temperatures climb into the 50s and 60s statewide. The Rio Grande Valley will top out around 70 degrees with the Panhandle, Texoma, and Northwest Texas the cooler spots today with highs in the low 50s. Winds will pick up out of the south across the western half of Texas this afternoon while the eastern half remain light out of the north. Wind gusts could top 20 MPH across West Texas – just enough to make it breezy.

Temperatures tonight will be on the cool side again but a few degrees warmer than this morning. The coldest spots will drop off into the mid 20s while the coast and the Rio Grande Valley should drop into the 40s by Saturday morning. SKies today and tonight will be crystal clear.

A cold front will move south on Monday into Tuesday. Moisture levels will be limited and thus so will precipitation chances. We may see a few showers/storms Monday Night across Southeast Texas and again on Tuesday. At this point Christmas looks dry and very warm. A storm system will arrive just after Christmas and could be potent – we’ll have to watch it closely.
