Cold Front Drops South Overnight – Chances for Rain/Storms Tonight & Wednesday

The cold front we’ve been yakking about for the past several days is slowly drifting south through the panhandle this evening.  So far, it’s been fairly quiet storm-wise, with only isolated storms ahead of the front across far west Texas this afternoon, and a few strong storms developing at this time in northeastern New Mexico near the Texas border.  These are expected to continue to drift south and east during the overnight hours with additional development possible overnight across the central and southeastern portions of the panhandle along and behind the front.  Tomorrow, the best chances of rain will migrate into northern Texas as the front continues moving into and south of the DFW metroplex by tomorrow afternoon and eventually stalling out across south central Texas on Thursday.  This cold front will unfortunately not make it through the entire state, but those behind it will get their first taste of fall with lows in the 50s and 60s the next several mornings!

Rain chances won’t be spectacular for most areas, but for folks in parts of north and central Texas, this could be the best rain chances to be had for the past 40+ days.  The highest rainfall accumulations from this system are expected across northeast, east, southeast and southern/coastal areas with some folks receiving accumulations topping 2 inches between now and Friday evening.  Not a bad thing for August and for slowing the return of drought conditions across the eastern and northern half of the state.

Rainfall thru Friday Evening

Rainfall since August 1st

Highs behind the front will be pleasant and in the 80s…with Thursday expected to be the coolest day of the week.  By Friday, temps will be climbing back up into the 90s which is pretty normal for this time of the year.  Nevertheless, Thursday will be a welcome relief! Another cold front is expected to arrive late Sunday into Monday, but at this time, it’s not expected to be as strong or have as much of an impact for our state.  But, it will bring additional rain chances…more on that as we get closer to the weekend!
