2pm Sunday – Tropical Update – 70% Chance of Tropical Storm Formation

As of 2pm this afternoon, the National Hurricane Center has upgraded Invest 91 to a 70% chance of tropical storm formation within the next 48 hours.  The current center of low pressure has moved off the Yucatan Peninsula and into the southern Gulf of Mexico.  It’s expected to continue moving northwest across the southern Gulf and into an area with upper level winds more favorable for tropical storm development in the next day or so.  The system does not yet have a well-defined center of circulation; however gale force winds have been recorded to the east of the low’s center.  Hurricane hunter aircraft is expected to be deployed this afternoon to investigate and take local atmospheric measurements. It’s highly likely we could see an upgrade to Tropical Storm “Bill” by later tomorrow.
