An upgrade to a Moderate Risk of Severe Weather has been issued for potions of North Texas.  The Moderate Risk area includes the cities of Gainesville, Sherman, Dennison, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Granbury, Mineral Wells, Stephenville, Corsicana, Bonham, Paris, Tyler, Longview, Sulphur Springs, Texarkana and their surrounding towns and communities.  An Enhanced Risk of severe weather covers Wichita Falls, Abilene, Waco, Killeen, Austin, San Antonio, Bryan/College Station and Huntsville.  The Slight Risk area includes parts of west central Texas, western Hill Country and coastal south/southeast Texas.
At this time, we have two separate thunderstorm cluster underway…one across west central Texas between Big Spring and Colorado City,  and the other just west of San Antonio.  The first is expected to impact western North Texas west of D/FW around 2 to 3pm, give or take, with large hail, and damaging winds as the primary threat.  Current thinking has this cluster eventually forming into a bow echo (Derecho) which is basically a very long squall line of storms carrying a high wind threat along with the possibility of embedded brief tornadic spin-ups along the leading edge.  It’s due to this latest development that the Storm Prediction Center decided to upgrade north/northeast Texas to Moderate Risk.  As for the southern cluster of storms, depending on how things evolve, it will continue to move east into the Hill Country region by around noon with a threat of large hail, damaging winds, and a few brief tornadoes as well.  A Severe Thunderstorm WATCH is already in place for parts of western north Texas until 1pm today.  It’s expected that an additional Watch for the western Hill Country will be issued shortly.
