9:30pm Rainfall Update

Our beneficial precipitation event is well underway across the state this evening.  While I know some of you would rather this be a winter storm event with a snow day tomorrow, it looks like most of us…with the exception of folks in the panhandle and western portions of Texas…will be at work or school tomorrow gazing out the window watching the raindrops fall.  David has already issued his latest winter weather update, so the focus for this blog will be the beneficial rainfall we’ll be receiving over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Our slow moving cold front from Tuesday has finally made it through the upper and middle coastal areas, and is expected clear the coast of deep south Texas by tomorrow afternoon.  Widespread light to moderate rainfall will continue to develop across northern, central and southern parts of the state overnight and will remain a fixture across the area until Friday afternoon.  Rainfall totals look quite healthy for this time of the year with totals up to 2 inches possible across parts of central, east and southeast Texas through tomorrow evening.

Rainfall through Thurs EveningMost of the state…aside from the panhandle, west and northwest Texas…will remain above freezing for this event even after the passage of the cold front.  Morning lows for north central and northeast Texas should be hovering in the mid 30s to low 40s.  For central Texas, mid to upper 40s with 50s and 60s along the coast.

Here’s how the radar will be shaping up overnight and through noon tomorrow.  Even those who will not be waking up to snow tomorrow morning will still have to deal with a messy and chilly commute to work or school with wet roadways and the typical hydrologically challenged drivers.  Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination!

Overall rainfall totals with this event are looking quite healthy with well over 2 inches possible across parts of central and southeast Texas, but we still need quite few more of these rain events to dig us out of our hydrological drought.
