Winter Storm Warning for South & Rolling Plains

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of the South Plains and Rolling Plains. This watch takes effect later this morning and continues until 9 AM on Saturday and is an upgrade from the Winter Storm Watch. The latest weather model data continues to advertise a significant winter storm for the region as abundant moisture combines with sub-freezing temperatures later today. There will be a dual threat of both snow and freezing rain. Snow is more likely across the Panhandle where colder air will be in place. Snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches will be possible there by the time this event concludes Saturday morning. Elsewhere in the South Plains and Rolling Plains the threat for freezing rain is significant with ice accumulations of 0.25″ to 0.50″ possible. Those accumulations will not only make travel nearly impossible but some power outages could also occur as power lines and tree branches are weighed down by ice. Travel is NOT recommended today into Saturday morning especially once this winter storm ramps up. Roads are still a mess after the New Years Eve winter storm and will quickly go downhill later today.
