While I agree with and understand both Jenny and Greg's comments, I have to add my two cents. Last spring, I had to drive my daughter to school during a raging thunderstorm (gotta love Oklahoma). We made it to school okay, but on my short drive home it started raining so hard I could see the tail lights of the car ahead of me but that was about it. I would have pulled over, but there was no shoulder to the road and tons of traffic. Without realizing it until the last second, I drove into water- it had to be halfway up my tires but thankfully my car didn't stall. My point is, if someone drives past a barricade or emergency personnel- that one's on them. THAT is sheer stupidity. I also agree that people don't know how to act during a warning and wait to see what other people are doing before they take action. However, I think sometimes in these situations, it truly can be an accident. Instead of people just being idiots, I think some cases are simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As a 1st responder (Paramedic / Firefighter / Swift Water Rescuer / and all the other specailities) when the road is BARRICADED by the police (or other agencies) and people CHOOSE to drive THROUGH the barricades, knocking them over OR driving around them and having to drive into the grassy areas adjacent to the road causing damage to the yards they CHOOS to drive through OR drive around the fire truck that is completly blocking the road as we affect a swift water rescue and then attempt to drive over us in the water (right before we have to resuce THEM!), then there is seriously something wrong with their abilty to “make a calculated decision.” There alread exists laws to heavily fine these people for their actions which need s to be enforced. Not only are they selfishly putting themselves in danger, but they also causing greif and pain to the family members they will leave behind if they should die in their stubberness and they also needlesly risk the lives of the responders who have to put themselves in harms way to rescue them. It boils down to: the DECISION was made that a hazard exists when the barricades were put in place. PERIOD! THE END! Their only decision is to accept that decision and drive away from the hazard.
