Increasing Threat For A Moderate to High-Impact Winter Weather Event Late Monday through Tuesday

Concerns are increasing that we will be dealing with a moderate to potentially high-impact winter weather event across parts of north and central Texas early this week. A strong arctic front will arrive Monday afternoon and continue to plunge south Monday night and through Tuesday. Temperatures behind the front will quickly drop into the 30s and 20s and remain at or below freezing for most of northern, eastern and central Texas through Wednesday. We will also be dealing with wind chills in the teens and 20s. Data rolling in overnight suggests the potential for better lift and somewhat higher precipitation chances with this next system, and this is leading to increased concern over the potential for a widespread mix of winter weather including ice, sleet and snow. Overall totals still look to be on the lighter side; however, with temperatures not expected to get above freezing for much of north, east central and western Texas until mid-week, any precip that falls will have a better chance of sticking around and causing headaches for roadway travel. At this time, Winter Weather Advisories have not been issued, but we’ll likely see that change by later this evening or tonight once the data rolling in today has been analyzed. Best chances for accumulating sleet and snow will be where better moisture resides. Right now, that’s looking to be across the southern half of north Texas mainly along and south of the I-20 corridor and for the northern half of south central Texas. It’s still too soon to be certain of exact locations for highest impacts from wintry weather. We will continue to monitor this developing weather system and bring you the latest as any Advisories are issued.
