Continued Hot & Mostly Dry – Rain Chances Return Next Week

Lack of rainfall this month continues to impact drought conditions across parts of the state.  The latest drought monitor released this morning has bumped several of our northeast Texas counties up into the Severe Drought category:  Camp, Franklin, Hopkins, Morris, Titus, Upshur & Wood.  Many of the surrounding east Texas counties are under Moderate drought, with most receiving less than 1 to 1.5 inches of rain on average over the past month.

Thankfully, things are looking up for the return of rain chances by the middle of next week with the approach of an upper level low.  Rain and thunderstorm chances will be on the increase beginning Tuesday and will likely continue through Thursday.  Exactly how much rain will fall, and what portions of the state are expected to receive the most amount of rain, are details which remain a bit unclear at this time.  But, it’s a pattern shift we’re definitely looking forward to and we’ll have more details forthcoming as better forecast model data rolls in over the coming weekend.

In the meantime, we’re still looking at a string of abnormally high temperatures tomorrow and through the early part of the week before we begin to feel the impacts of this next system.  For tonight, lows will remain warm and somewhat muggy for this late in October with patchy dense fog possible again tomorrow across southeast Texas and the coastal plains.  Highs tomorrow will range a good 20 degrees above average for much of the panhandle region, 10 to 15 degrees above average for parts of north and central Texas, and within about 5 degrees above average for the southern half of the state.  We may beat a couple of record highs tomorrow afternoon…specifically Dallas and Ft. Worth which both had a record high of 84 back on 10/28/2004, and Amarillo which had a record high of 85 on 10/28/1981.  Needless to say, we’ve had record warmth across the state this month.
