Cool Front For Northwest Half of TX Saturday; Rain Chances Start Tonight

2016-09-09_7-14-34

It has been a mostly dry morning across Texas with the exception of a few showers in Deep South Texas. More common is fog, some dense, from Southeast Texas west/northwest into Northwest Texas. The pesky morning fog should burn off by 10 AM in most locations.

Rain chances today will be relegated to Southeast Texas where the typical unsettled afternoon popup storms are likely to occur again today. Activity will become scattered by the mid-afternoon hours with a 2 in 5 chance of getting a brief downpour. Otherwise most rain showers will be dissipating/weakening by 7 PM. There is the possibility of isolated showers and storms across the western half of Texas through this afternoon, but chances are low…

That changes tonight as numerous showers and thunderstorms, in association with a cold front, move south across the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Northwest Texas, Big Country, and Texoma. Thunderstorm development may occur around sunset across the Texas Panhandle and West Texas – a threat to the evening football games. It looks like chances will hold off until late evening/overnight in Northwest Texas and Texoma, hopefully allowing the high school football games to be conducted without any weather issues.

On Saturday a cool front will be bisecting the Permian Basin northeast through the Concho Valley, into North Texas and Northeast Texas. Rain chances will continue in proximity of the front and south of the front where abundant moisture will be available. Some of the activity may produce locally heavy rain, but it won’t be raining everywhere nor will it rain all day in every location. The best chance (a 3 in 5 chance) of getting wet will be in the Permian Basin, Concho Valley, Big Country, Northwest Texas, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. Slightly lower chances are forecast in South-Central Texas, Central Texas, Southeast Texas, into South Texas. The Panhandle should be firmly entrenched in the drier, cooler air mass.

High temperatures tomorrow will be noticeably cooler across the northwest half of Texas. The Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Northwest Texas, Big Country, Concho Valley, and Permian Basin will only top out in the 70s to lower 80s – with much lower humidity.
