Popup Storms This Afternoon; Severe Weather Tonight in the Panhandle

Today’s weather focus will be on the potential for afternoon popup storms again today. A second focus will be on the potential for a complex of severe thunderstorms tonight in the Texas Panhandle. We’ll discuss both concerns in detail. We’re starting off the morning without any showers or thunderstorms. Warm and humid conditions are common as is usual for a late July morning in Texas. Temperatures will warm into the lower and middle 90s by early afternoon as convective temperatures are reached across the eastern half of Texas.

When convective temperatures are reached we’ll see the first popup storms of the day begin. The best chance for scattered storms will be in East Texas into Southeast Texas and the Brazos Valley. Isolated activity will be possible further west in North Texas, Central Texas, Northwest Texas, into the Big Country, Concho Valley, and Far West Texas around El Paso. A few storms will probably become strong with a threat of localized, damaging wind gusts and heavy rain. Any storms that do fire up will slowly move and dump a boatload of rain in a hurry. This will be the kind of day where the neighborhood just to the east could pick up an inch of rain while you get nothing. Most folks will stay dry today, but if you’re lucky enough to get a storm nearby temperatures could drop off into the 80s. Any activity that develops should taper down by the early evening.

A uncertain element of the forecast is the conditional potential of a line of severe storms impacting the Texas Panhandle tonight. A complex of severe storms capable of producing widespread damaging winds is expected to develop in Colorado and Kansas. Depending on how far south this complex tracks it may impact portions of the Northeast Texas Panhandle tonight. If the storms maintain more of an eastward movement they may impact Oklahoma versus the Texas Panhandle. We’ll have to see how things evolve throughout the day. If we do see the storms move into the Panhandle tonight they may be severe with a threat of widespread, significant damaging winds of 70-80 MPH. At this time we don’t expect the severe weather threat to extend south of the Panhandle.
