Storms moving into the Panhandle; Isolated Activity This Afternoon Along the Coast

Temperatures have cooled into reasonable territory for late June this morning. Temperatures are in the middle 60s to upper 70s. Compared to yesterday morning we’re about 2 degrees cooler. By this time next week temperatures will probably not be as pleasant in the morning hours.

A cluster of thunderstorms is moving south into the northern Texas Panhandle. These storms originated in Nebraska yesterday and have moved south ever since. These storms are not severe but do contain frequent cloud to ground lightning, wind gusts up to 50 MPH, and moderate to heavy rain. This cluster of storms should slowly weaken this morning. There remains some uncertainty on how far south storms will make it. The enviornment across the Panhandle and West Texas is somewhat unstable with a good fetch of moisture in place. It isn’t out of the question that storms move south through the Panhandle and make it into hte South Plains this morning. If they do make it that far south they could continue to produce gusty winds before dissipating by early afternoon.

Otherwise we’re looking at lower rain chances today across the rest of the state. Isolated to widely scattered afternoon popup storms are expected in Southeast Texas, the Coastal Plains, the Middle Texas Coast, into South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley. Coverage of storms will remain under 30 percent – meaning 1/3rd of folks could get wet while 2/3rds remain dry. The strongest popcorn storms could produce frequent lightning, brief heavy rain, and gusty winds as they collapse. Like yesterday we should see storms mainly die down by early evening. Temperatures will top out in the 90s across much of Texas. Laredo will be the winner in the temperature contest with a forecast high of 101° this afternoon. Don’t laugh at them because many more of us will be in the triple digits next week.

Temperature outlook for next week – including the 4th of July

The ridge of high pressure aloft builds back in early next week. Rain chances become lower and temperatures are going back up. High temperatures could be in the triple digits several days next week for several regions – along with elevated heat index values. The 4th of July is looking pretty hot at this point with high temperatures in the 95-105 degree range. Heat index values could exceed 105 degrees in the eastern half of Texas. This certainly won’t be one of those ‘cooler’ years for the 4th of July.
