North/Northeast Texas Upgraded to Moderate Risk for Severe Weather

2015-05-25_8-13-57

An outbreak of severe weather is becoming increasingly likely today across Texas. A level 4 Moderate Risk of Severe Weather is now in effect for North and Northeast Texas. A level 3 enhanced risk for severe weather is in effect for the Big Country, Central Texas, Brazos Valley, and East Texas. A level 2 possible risk is in effect for the Concho Valley, South Texas, and Southeast Texas. Very large hail up to the size of baseballs, destructive hurricane force winds exceeding 75 MPH, and tornadoes are all threats today. The highest threat for widespread wind damage will be with the squall line later today. Any discrete thunderstorms along with embedded supercells in the squall line will have the highest threat for tornadoes.

The main timeframe for the D/FW Metroplex has changed a bit compared to earlier. I’m now thinking 2 PM to 8 PM will feature the best chance for severe thunderstorms in the D/FW Metroplex. 1 PM through 9 PM for Central Texas. It’s a volatile situation today so please have a way to receive weather warnings and proceed to a safe place should you come under a severe weather warning. Those outdoors today especially need to take heed to warnings.

Preparedness actions…

Review your severe weather safety procedures for the possibility
of dangerous weather today. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio,
weather.gov, or other media for watches and warnings. A watch
means that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms
over the next several hours. If a severe thunderstorm warning is
issued for your area, move to a place of safety, ideally in an
interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
