Temperatures have cooled nicely this evening as our strong cold front has now pushed south into Mexico and southeast out into the Gulf of Mexico. Temperatures generally range from rather chilly upper 40s in the Texas Panhandle up into the upper 60s to right around 70 degrees along the coast at 9 PM. Considering it is early October those aren’t bad at all. The real blessing is the much lower humidity and dewpoint values across all of Texas. I doubt I’m the only one who is enjoying a more typical fall airmass this evening.

With a dry airmass in place, temperatures will continue to fall nicely until just before sunrise on Wednesday. Lows will be in the middle to the upper 30s in the Texas Panhandle where frost is a possibility. We are not expecting a widespread freeze up there tonight, but I can’t rule out one or two low-lying locations from briefly touching 32 degrees. This is not expected to be a ‘killer freeze’ kind of night. Lows into the 40s can be expected as far south as the Concho Valley to the D/FW Metroplex (excluding the warmest parts of the heat island) into Northeast Texas. The 50s to middle 60s will be common-place farther south into South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, Coastal Plains, Middle Texas Coast, and Southeast Texas. Only the immediate coastline will remain in the lower 70s tonight. Enjoy the pleasant morning because temperatures will start warming back up in a hurry tomorrow through the end of the work week as southeasterly winds quickly return a moist airmass to the state.

With a transition to a more fall-like pattern, we’ll start having precipitation chances and cool fronts every couple of days. Our next chance for precipitation will accompany our next cool front this weekend. I’ve included a graphic from the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, but those farther north and northwest should expect the storm chances and cool front on Saturday – while those farther south will likely have to wait until the early part of next week.
