Cold Front Arrives – Widespread Rain Chances Monday – Tuesday

After a day of record highs on Saturday, we return to a more seasonal weather pattern early this week.  At the time of this blog, the cold front has moved through the panhandle region and is now pushing through the north central Texas region.  It will reach central Texas by early this afternoon eventually stalling out just shy of the coast by early tomorrow.  Winds behind the front will be quite gusty today with Wind Advisories in place through early this evening for much of northern Texas, west central Texas, the southern Texas Panhandle region, Rolling plains and Permian Basin/Trans Pecos regions. Sustained winds 20-30mph with gusts up to 50mph will be likely, so definitely keep that in mind while out and about today.

Highs today…much cooler across the northern half of the state behind the front.  Highs today across the panhandle will only reach the upper 40s to low 50s.  North Texas will see their highs reached fairly early this afternoon, then steadily fall overnight and into Monday as well as cold air continues to filter south into the state. Unfortunately, with the front stalling out before hitting the coast, residents south of the front will continue to see much warmer conditions for another day or so before seeing any relief from the front.

Precipitation chances kick into gear beginning late tonight and through Tuesday as an upper level low approaches from the west.  Wintry weather chances begin tonight and continue through Monday across the panhandle region with a mixed bag of winter precip expected the next 24 to 48 hours. Snow accumulation of 1-2 inches will be possible for Monday with another inch or so possible Tuesday before this system begins to shift east and out of the area. Obviously residents across the panhandle region and higher elevations of far west Texas can expect a messy couple of days dealing with travel hazards during morning and evening commutes.

For the rest of the state…just rain…and a decent amount of it Monday through Tuesday.  Some areas could see some flooding issues from this week’s rain event…mainly along and near the I-35 corridor across central Texas where the highest amounts of rainfall are expected at this time, but overall widespread flooding is not expected.  We’ll get into more detail about exact rain amounts each day this week as the forecast continues to develop!
