Last Pleasant Fall Day Before Widespread Rainfall Returns For The Weekend

Today will be our last day of relatively quiet and benign weather before our next weather pattern shift arrives on Friday.  Skies will be mostly clear today with the exception of deep south Texas, and temperatures overall will be seasonal.  On Friday, an upper level low will drop south into northern Mexico where it will hang around for a couple of days generating chances for widespread rainfall across the state beginning early Friday and continuing through the weekend ahead.  We will also see chances for snow Friday night into early Saturday across portions of the panhandle…mainly north and west of Amarillo.

There is still some model discrepancies on just how far south the upper level low will drop which would have a pretty big impact on exactly how much precipitation/snow falls across the panhandle region.  The further south the upper level low travels, snow, winter mix and rainfall chances will decrease for the panhandle late Friday into Saturday…and for northern Texas as well…so this will be something we will be watching over the next 24 hours.  For the remainder of the state, it will be a cold and wet weekend perfect for just staying indoors, lighting a fire and relaxing with a hot beverage.  That said, get all your shopping and chores done on Friday if you can so you don’t have to travel around in the mess over the weekend!

Taking a look at the projected rainfall amounts Friday through Sunday show the highest amounts east, southeast and south central Texas where a coastal trough combined with the aforementioned upper level low is expected to enhance rainfall amounts.  Current precipitation forecasts are showing anywhere from 4-5 inches of rainfall between Friday and Monday evening.  For now, local forecast offices are holding off on issuing any Flash Flood Watches as soils are fairly dry across the region, but that could change by late Sunday into Monday depending on how much rain falls during the Friday through mid-day Sunday timeframe.
