Rain Chances Continue All Week

081516_TxMap

It’s a beautiful August morning for those that enjoy non-typical summer weather. The sky is filled with clouds and rain is falling across a decent chunk of the southeast half of Texas this morning. Light to moderate rain has increased in coverage overnight. No flash flood warnings were issued overnight as precipitation remained fairly light overnight. For the most part that will remain the case today. One consequence of the widespread clouds and precipitation will be noticeably cooler temperatures. Compared to last week temperatures will be up to twenty degrees cooler this afternoon. Instead of discussing above-average temperatures in the 100s the opposite will be true today. High temperatures, for the most part, will be several degrees below summer-time norms.

Scattered to numerous showers will continue for much of the day east of a line from Southwest Texas through western North Texas – including Central Texas, South Texas, Southeast Texas, East Texas, and Northeast Texas. Not all locations will experience constant precipitation today nor will heavy rain be a widespread occurrence.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for South-Central Texas and Southeast Texas through this evening. Widespread flooding is not expected but we may see localized issues develop. Copious amounts of moisture are in place today. The stronger cells could produce impressive rainfall rates. If those heavy rains fall over an area that has already seen plenty of rain recently localized flooding may develop.

Below-average temperatures and precipitation chances will continue through the entire week. It won’t rain in all locations all the time. Over the next seven days some locations could pick up three to five inches of rain. Spread out over several days we should be able to prevent widespread or considerable flash flooding issues. We’ll have to keep an eye on trends in case rain totals start to pick up with an associated cold front next weekend.
