Seasonably Warm with Chances for Showers Again Today

hrrr_2016062512_ref_tx

Simulated Radar through 10pm

A weak upper low spinning over northern Mexico will enhance scattered shower and storm chances today from the coastal bend and inland regions of south central Texas today.  We already have considerable cloudiness and scattered showers ongoing across this region this morning, and this activity will continue to develop and expand northward today.  Most of the storm activity here will remain sub-severe with lightning and brief heavy downpours as the greatest threats, and rainfall amounts generally less than 1/3 inch.  Further north, an uptick in scattered showers and storms is expected once again across northeast New Mexico and southeastern Colorado later this afternoon.  This activity will likely encroach on the OK/TX panhandle region by late afternoon and move into the northern panhandle after sunset.  Severe weather is not expected, however some of the stronger cells that develop as the line moves into the northern panhandle could contain damaging downburst winds.

Highs today, thankfully seasonal with nothing too extreme.  Heat index values this afternoon will remain below 100 degrees for most of the state, the exception being across far southwest Texas along the Rio Grande plains where we will see values reach into the low 100s today.

Highs Today

Looking ahead, the western half of the state will continue to see scattered rain chances tomorrow before the weak upper low eventually dissipates. The northern portions of the state will see an increase in activity into next week as a weak frontal boundary stalls just north of the area.  Our friendly neighborhood ridge of high pressure will begin to build again to our north and west which will put us on the eastern fringes of the ridge and subject to daily chances of seeing rain and showers during the late evening and overnight hours.
