The eastern half of Texas is still quite warm at lunch with temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Heat index values are around five degrees warmer than the actual air temperature. Some locations will approach heat index values up to 100° this afternoon. El Paso, Midland, and Sweetwater are ‘only’ in the middle 80s along with more rain-cooled locations in South Texas. High temperatures this afternoon will range from the upper 80s to the upper 90s across Texas.

Afternoon Rain Chances

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are already underway across Southeast Texas, the Coastal Plains, South-Central Texas, into the Rio Grande Valley. Those showers combined with mostly cloudy skies are helping to keep temperatures a bit cooler. Those who end up under a shower will cool off into the middle 80s. It definitely won’t be the nicest day to be on some of our beaches this afternoon – but the sun is shining from the TX/LA border southwest to about 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi along the beach. Showers/storms will continue to pop up this afternoon. Severe weather is not expected but lightning is extremely dangerous to those outdoors. If thunder roars move indoors. Same thing goes if you see lightning. Those that end up under a shower/storm shouldn’t get wet for more than an hour. Isolated storms are also possible later this afternoon in the Texas Panhandle – but coverage of storms will remain low.
