Return of Triple Digit Temperatures Today; Derecho Tonight in the Midwest

2016-06-22_5-35-51

Temperatures are headed back up today with several regions experiencing 100°F+. The Texas Panhandle, Northwest Texas, Far West Texas, and Southwest Texas will all see high temperatures top out in the 99-103 degree range this afternoon. It’ll certainly be toasty but not anything unusual for this time of year. Elsewhere in Texas high temperatures will range from the upper 80s along the beach into the middle and upper 90s just inland and in most of Texas. There are a few showers moving onshore in Southeast Texas this morning. Rain chances are lower compared to Monday and Tuesday but a few showers will remain possible throughout the day from SOutheast Texas southwest through the Coastal Plains and Deep South Texas. The vast majority of folks will be dry as a kite. The second region of potential isolated storms will be in the northwest Texas Panhandle this afternoon and early evening. Severe thunderstorms are not expected in either region today.

Many eyes in the weather community are focused on the Midwest and Ohio Valley today where a severe weather event will unfold. There has already been some hailers in Iowa overnight but that activity has mainly died down at the time of this post. The main show will begin  this afternoon with a category 4 risk of severe weather across northern Illinois northern Indiana, and western Ohio. A category 3 risk fos severe weather runs from eastern Iowa through Ohio, northern Kentucky, and West Virginia. Scattered supercells will develop after 3 PM this afternoon in eastern Iowa and northern Illinois. All modes of severe weather are possible with a strong tornado not out of the realm of possibility. The main severe weather threat will be once storms congeal into a cluster and start racing southeast. A widespread and significant damaging wind event is expected to unfold this evening. The threat for widespread damaging winds could extend as far east as the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic by late tonight as storms race east/southeast.
