The Storm Prediction Center has added a category 2 severe weather risk for Central Texas, North Texas, and Northeast Texas today. The category 1 severe weather risk zone remains unchanged from our earlier discussion. The cat. 2 risk zone has been added due to the number of storms expected this afternoon and evening. Storm severity won’t necessarily be increased – its just we’re going to see more storms. The strongest storms could produce hail up to the size of half-dollars (1.25″) and localized wind gusts over 60 MPH. The tornado threat is very low. By far the most significant threat today – and through Friday – will be the risk of additional flooding. For more information on the flooding threat please read our discussion we published a bit earlier here. Thunderstorms are already underway across western North Texas south into the Concho Valley. These storms will slowly move east with new storms also firing up in North and Central Texas as temperatures warm up.
