Severe Weather & Flooding Threat Increasing in the Texas Panhandle

2016-05-29_13-51-36

Due to the potential widespread nature of thunderstorm development this afternoon and evening the National Weather Service in Amarillo has elected to issue a flash flood watch for their entire coverage area. This watch includes the entire Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. A flash flood watch means conditions are favorable for the development of flooding in some (NOT ALL) locations. SOme folks could pick up a quick couple inches of rain today which would cause flash flooding to develop. Stay off low-water crossings and away from dirt roads.

Severe thunderstorms have erupted over the northern Texas Panhandle over the last hour. We now have multiple severe thunderstorm warnings including for the Dumas, Miami, and Canadian areas. ANother storm near Borger could go severe shortly. These storms are moving in different directions and at only 5 to 10 MPH. The strongest cores over the next few hours could produce hail up to the size of tennis-balls and localized damaging wind gusts over 70 MPH. A significant concern will be very heavy rainfall production with slow-moving storms. It is not out of the question that some locations receive 2 to 3 inches of rain in a 60 minute period. With multiple slow-moving storms there will likely be flooding issues this afternoon and evening in parts of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Stay away from low-water crossings and off dirt (mud) roads. Be aware that typically dry streams and creeks could quickly rise at an exponential rate.
