4PM: Severe Storms In Progress West of San Angelo

2016-05-17_15-56-07

Severe thunderstorms have erupted across the western Big Country this afternoon. The storms themselves aren’t really moving much although new activity continues to fire along an east/west boundary. Severe storms now extend from 5 miles east of Rankin through Big Lake to just west of Mertzon. Storms are making slow east progress around 15 MPH. The strongest storms may produce hail up to the size of tennis-balls and localized wind gusts over 60 MPH. Very heavy rainfall rates are being observed which may lead to localized flash flooding. As storms continue to develop and progress to the east the city of San Angelo may come under threat in the next two hours. Additional storms may fire up on the boundary which is located around 15 miles south of San Angelo at the time of this writing. By early evening storms should have generated enough of a cold pool to start progressing more steadily to the southeast with a threat of large hail and damaging wind gusts.
