The remnants of Hurricane Patricia are increasing wind shear over the Rio Grande Valley, Deep South Texas, and most of the Texas coast up into Southeast Texas this afternoon. A brief tornado has already been confirmed from earlier this morning in Pearland, TX where it did minor damage. The Storm Prediction Center has placed a category 2 risk of severe weather for the risk of spin up tornadoes. The threat seems to be increasing this afternoon and in all likelihood will continue to be a concern into tonight. With a tropical airmass in place along with strong low level wind shear these type of spin up tornadoes are not all that unusual. Typically they are weak and short-lived. They also tend to spin up quickly and thus don’t allow much time to take shelter if a warning is issued or a tornado visually spotted. With an increasing tornado threat this afternoon the Storm Prediction Center has indicated a watch may be required.
