Slight Rain Chances Today – Another Cold Front Arrives Overnight

Warming up today with highs at to slightly above our seasonal normals for this time of the year.  A few areas in western Texas and along the Rio Grande could be flirting with 100 degrees again by this afternoon, but a majority of the state will be in the mid 90s range by this afternoon.  A strong cold front will dive into the panhandle tonight, but unfortunately, this front won’t have as big of an impact over a large swath of the state like our previous front.  Highs tomorrow across the panhandle will be in the 70s to low 80s…but elsewhere, we’ll still be looking at mid to upper 90s with a few 100 degree readings scattered about western Texas in the Pecos region, and along the Rio Grande.

Rain chances today will reside mainly along the coast and eastern Texas this morning through the afternoon hours with isolated to scattered pop-up rainshowers and a few thunderstorms.  These areas could see some locally heavy rainfall under some of the more prolific storms, but it’s impossible to pinpoint where that will set up today.  Towards the afternoon hours, western Texas and parts of the panhandle will see development of scattered rain and storms into the evening hours.  Not expecting widespread severe with these, but we could see a few strong cells with downburst winds and lightning as the main threats.

A look ahead…unfortunately it looks like our typical summertime ridge of high pressure will begin to build back east by the middle of the coming week.  This will bring increasing high temps and decreasing rain chances for the state as a whole, but there will still be some chances of seeing a few storms for northern and eastern Texas kicked up by subtle disturbances along the periphery of the ridge.
